About the Department of English Department of English is one of the sixteen Departments of Patuakhali Government College located at the last edge of Southern Bangladesh. English emerges as an academic discipline from the very beginning of the institution. It was then taught as a compulsory subject only in the Higher Secondary and Degree (Pass Course)level and later in the post-liberation period as a compulsory and Non-Credit subject in the Honour’s courses. English came up as an independent Department for Honour’s Course under National University in the 1996-1997 academic session. The Department got affiliation on Masters Courses (Final & Private) under National University in the academic session 2013-2014. The smart classrooms of this Department are well-equipped with modern digital teaching & learning materials. Considerable numbers of reference books have enriched its well-furnished seminar. The students of this Department are dynamic and creative. They have ample scopes to take active part in various extra-curricular activities within the Department and out of the Department. In the Annual Literary Competition of the College, the students of this Department always play leading parts. Their achievements in the Annual Sports and Indoor Games Competition are also prominent. The Department arranges Study Tour every year for the students to know about the culture and heritage of their native land. At present, a formidable number of post-graduates are serving for the Government and Non-Government institutions around Bangladesh with credit. The Department aims at creating skilled manpower by imparting quality education and native culture. Speech of the Head of the Department English is no longer a foreign language in Bangladesh neither the unique possession of British or American or other native-speaker people, but a language that belongs to the world’s people. For many reasons, English has achieved the prestige of being lingua-franca even in our Bangladesh at the present moment. A good working knowledge in English is today a must to accelerate the tempo of our academic activities and also to get connected globally. It enables learners to respect and value themselves and others for the improvement of peaceful co-existence among people of differing cultural traditions. Much of which is good in English can contribute a lot to the development of our native language and literature.
